Belmar Residents Against The Mediterranean Project!

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are opposed to the redevelopment project, known as the Mediterranean, which is being proposed for the properties on Rt. 35 North, between 8th and 10th avenues in Belmar, NJ. The project, as proposed, will consist of 246 apartments: 132 one-bedroom units, 91 two-bedroom units and 23 studio units, in two five story buildings.

Our opposition is based on the following:

1. The overall size of the project is out of character with the “small town” atmosphere of the borough.
2. The Mediterranean project falls within the Seaport Redevelopment area or zone, but does not conform to the requirements of the Seaport Redevelopment Plan in three respects: building height, number of required parking spaces, and amount of impervious coverage.
3. Entrances and exits for the complex are proposed on Rt. 35 North and West Railroad Avenue leading to 10 th Avenue. These areas currently experience heavy traffic year round and this project will substantially increase the traffic, and cause delays on the north and south bound lanes of State Route 35.

We urge the Mayor and Council to NOT approve this application for redevelopment as proposed. We further request that the Mayor and Council require any development proposals for this site comply with all requirements of the Seaport Redevelopment Plan, and NOT approve any changes to the Seaport Redevelopment Plan in support of this or any future project.
