Stop Building Cell Phone Towers in Residential Areas in Milton!
The Issue
PROPOSED BELL CELL TOWER - Please sign this petition to stop the 100 foot cell tower on the front lawn of the New Life Church on Thompson Road and any other cell tower from being built within residential areas in Milton.
If you have been following the news over the last couple of weeks, Bell Canada plans to install a new 100 foot cell tower on the front lawn of the New Life Church on Thomson Road. A number of us in the neighborhood are planning to fight this project for the following reasons:
• The potential health risk to our families and especially to young children.
• It will have a negative effect on property values
Numerous studies both local and international confirm home owners concerns that the radiation emitted from these towers have biological effects. For example, The World Health Organization in 2011 describes radio frequency radiation as a possible carcinogen. In 1992 the US Air Force released a study concluding that this energy causes cancer in rats. Closer to home, both The City of Toronto (via 2007 Staff Report) and the International Association of Fire Fighters also support our concerns.
As part of this process, Industry Canada requires Bell to only notify home owners within 120 meters of this proposed tower. Anyone beyond this radius has not been notified beyond what has been published in the Toronto Star, Milton Champion and on the Internet.
However, did you know people who live 600 to 1,500 feet away from the base of this tower are possibly at greater risk than the people who live only 300 feet away?
Simply, the energy that is emitted from this tower travels similar to how a beam of light leaves a flashlight. As the signal travels further from the tower it grows in size.
Even thought this is a federal issue having local politician support is imperative in this fight. A number of us have already contacted our elected officials (ie: local council, MPP and MP) and currently we are getting little if any support from them. One of our goals is to show that the community does not want this tower. If we can get enough involvement then this may convince the politicians to back the voters. The only way we can have this tower defeated is strength in numbers.
On April 12th there will be an open public meeting at the Milton Leisure Centre, activity room from 7 pm to 9 pm (1100 Main St E). We as a community must send a message to Industry Canada and Bell that if you plan to install a tower in Milton that they are placed outside any residential neighborhoods!!!
We hope to see you at the meeting
