Bring Back the Bus Stop to Upper Bell Canyon Road

Bring Back the Bus Stop to Upper Bell Canyon Road
The Issue
Many residents move to Bell Canyon to raise their families and for the opportunity for their children to attend Las Virgenes Unified Schools, which ranks in the top 20 of all California school districts. Our home values are tied to being part of LVUSD. We are a family friendly neighborhood.
Many families purchased their homes depending on the upper bus stop. It is a necessity and a selling point. For years a 2nd bus stop on upper Bell Canyon Road existed. With construction of new homes there, the bus stop needed to be moved up slightly and a concrete pad created. A structure similar to the one at lower bus stop is planned.
Families have been waiting over 3 years for resolution. The stall in construction of the bus stop on Upper Bell Canyon Road has had a negative impact on the lives of families and children.
Without this second stop students are either stranded at school for hours waiting for parents to finish work or are walking home an extra 2-3 miles with backpacks, sports equipment, and music instruments.
The location of a school bus stop on Upper Bell Canyon Road is accessible to families living on Buckskin, Bell Canyon Road, and homes off Saddlebow.
Bell Canyon is the only community in LVUSD with a second District bus stop. School officials feel that the lower bus stop is too far away for too many Bell Canyon students.
Without this second stop there is increased congestion at the lower bus stop, especially in the morning which has created an extremely dangerous situation. There is not enough parking, children are crossing the street at random intervals or are walking along a crowded street to reach the bus stop.
Opponents of the upper bus stop argue that the bus stop will be an "eyesore" and that the bus can simply stop in the middle of road. Pulling off the road is necessary as the pitch of the road is too steep thus decreasing visibility. Students cannot safety cross in front of the bus if it is stopped on a slope.
Opponents argue that the end of Saddlebow Road is the optimal location for a 2nd bus stop. This is untrue. Saddlebow is 2 miles long, has little to no shoulder with several blind curves and steep inclines. Traveling at or below the posted speed limit of 30 mph would add an additional 20 minutes (approximate,) to the bus route. The bus company will not do this.
Please sign on to lend your voice to demand completion of the Bell Canyon Road upper bus stop. Whether or not you have a student that rides the school bus, please help your neighbors. Please help put an end to the politicizing of this school bus. Thank you.
