Behind the Smile: The Hidden Mental Health Crisis Among Student
The Issue
Mental health has become a hidden crisis among senior high school students. Many of us face pressure from schoolwork, social expectations, and personal issues, yet we learn to hide our pain out of fear of being called “weak” or “crazy.” Anxiety, depression, and burnout are now common among us, but when a student has a breakdown, the typical reaction is silence or punishment for skipping class. Our school system handles physical illness with care—students with a fever are sent home to rest—but mental exhaustion often leads to unexcused absences and lower grades.
If this continues, the effects will be serious. Students may suffer quietly until they reach a breaking point. We have already seen cases of young people dropping out, self-harming, or worse, feeling they have nowhere to turn. A school should be a place for growth, not somewhere students feel they must sacrifice their mental well-being to keep up.
We are calling on our school administration and local education officials to recognize that mental health is health. Specifically, we ask for "Mental Health Days" two to three excused absences each semester that students can use to rest, seek support, or just take a break without academic penalties. This policy exists in schools in other parts of the world, helping students recover and perform better in the long run.
At the same time, we encourage every student to speak out. Talk to a friend, reach out to a guidance counselor, and support classmates who are struggling. Stigma decreases when we start treating mental health as openly as we treat physical health.
By working together, we can create an environment where students are not afraid to ask for help. Change will not happen overnight, but if we speak up and demand better, we can build a culture of compassion instead of judgment.
Call to Action:
We urge our school leaders to adopt the Mental Health Day policy and for every student to sign this petition. Let’s show that our well-being matters. Sign, share, and stand with us because a healthy mind is just as important as a passing grade.
