Behind Every Bus: Support Our CCS Mechanics
The Issue
STAND WITH CCS TRANSPORTATION MECHANICS!
Demand Accountability, Transparency & Change
To the Cumberland County Board of Education, Superintendent, and CCS Leadership:
We, the undersigned parents, students, employees, transportation staff, and community members, are calling for immediate attention to the concerns within the Cumberland County Schools Transportation Department.
When CCS bus mechanic, “Tilly” felt compelled to publicly submit his notice during the Board of Education meeting, it raised serious questions that our community deserves to have answered. This moment should not simply be viewed as one employee leaving—it should be a wake-up call to examine the conditions that may be contributing to employee frustration, turnover, and concerns within transportation.
We are also asking CCS leadership to listen to and investigate Tilly’s story and the concerns surrounding his experience. Every employee, student, and family deserves an opportunity to be heard, and concerns should be addressed with transparency, fairness, and respect. We can not afford to listen when it’s too late!
WE ARE CALLING FOR:
1. An independent review of the CCS Transportation Department
Examine staffing, working conditions, communication, scheduling, workload, employee concerns, and operational practices-primarily in management. We’re losing good mechanics due to a lack of strong leadership.
2. A safe and supportive environment for bus drivers and transportation staff
Our transportation employees are responsible for safely transporting thousands of children. They deserve the resources, support, respect, and working conditions necessary to perform that responsibility. Our kids deserve this!
3. Transparency and accountability
Parents, employees, and community members deserve clear information regarding transportation challenges, staffing shortages, route issues, delays, vacancies, and steps being taken to address them.
4. A formal process for employees to report concerns without fear of retaliation
Transportation employees should have a meaningful way to raise concerns and receive responses without feeling that speaking up could jeopardize their employment. We also demand transparency as it’s been said these very issues have been reported before now-but been ignored!
5. A public response from CCS leadership
We are asking the Board and district leadership to acknowledge these concerns and provide the community with a clear plan for addressing them.
6. Meaningful change—not temporary fixes
We do not want concerns acknowledged only after an employee resigns or a situation becomes public. We want systems put in place that identify problems early and address them before employees and families reach a breaking point.
OUR CHILDREN DESERVE BETTER. OUR FAMILIES DESERVE BETTER! THE CCS MECHANICS DESERVE BETTER!
Our bus drivers are often the first and last CCS employee a child sees each school day. They are trusted with our children’s safety, well-being, and transportation. We will not waiver in this.
Supporting our transportation employees is ultimately about supporting our students.
We believe CCS transportation employees deserve to be heard.
We believe parents deserve transparency.
We believe students deserve safe and reliable transportation.
And we believe our community deserves leadership willing to listen, investigate, and create meaningful change.
We are asking the Cumberland County Board of Education to take these concerns seriously, investigate the issues within the Transportation Department, listen to the experiences of employees such as Tilly, and work collaboratively with transportation staff and the community to create lasting change.
SIGN THIS PETITION
By signing, I am asking Cumberland County Schools leadership and the Board of Education to listen, investigate, be transparent, and take meaningful action to improve the CCS Transportation Department.
