Bega Valley Shire Council has a plan to move the Memorial Clock from its original site - a site on which it has stood for about 85 years. The Clock is one of very few iconic structures remaining in Bega and it is of significant historic and community value. Once it is dismantled its context is gone and so is its intrinsic historic and community value. The Clock is one of the very few structures in our CBD that lend any character and soul to the town. Council seems intent on turning Bega into another unremarkable generic suburb .. we have seen this before; recently in Littleton Gardens and in the attempts at modernisation during the 50's, 60's and 70's, just look at what has become of the Westpac Bank residence and some of the more ugly additions to the main street. Council says it consults .. but it does not seem to have heard us in the past. Please share and sign this petition and let council know what we really think.
