Protecting Sibling Bonds After Adoption
We, the undersigned, call on New York State lawmakers to strengthen protections for sibling relationships after adoption.

For children who experience foster care and adoption, siblings can be one of the longest and most meaningful relationships in their lives. They share memories, family history, traditions, loss, and experiences that no professional or service can replace.

Yet when an adoption becomes final, siblings can lose contact with one another, even when maintaining that relationship is safe and in their best interests.

Beau’s Law seeks to change that.

We are asking New York State to create stronger protections for safe, meaningful, and ongoing sibling contact after adoption, including consideration of regular communication, in person visits, birthdays, holidays, and other important moments in a child’s life.

Adoption may change a child’s legal family structure. It should not automatically erase their relationship with their siblings.

We invest significant resources in mental health treatment, crisis intervention, and services for children after they experience loss and trauma. We should also protect the healthy relationships that can provide connection, identity, belonging, and continuity before those bonds are lost.

We ask New York State lawmakers to support legislation that:
Protects safe and meaningful sibling relationships following adoption.

Requires sibling relationships and continued contact to be meaningfully considered when determining a child’s best interests.

Creates a clear process for addressing post adoption sibling contact when maintaining the relationship is safe and appropriate.

Recognizes that siblings are not simply part of a child’s past. They can be an important part of their future.
