Beacon, NY, Crosswalk Lights For 9D/Wolcott Ave

The Issue

It's estimated Beacon, NY, is home to around 15,259 residents

Beacon's pedestrian life is active, with many walkable areas along Main Street — and as one of the many draws to the town — Mount Beacon is a destination sought after for both tourists and residents alike.

Unfortunately, the main road known as Wolcott Ave,/9-D on the east side of town remains dangerous. While a crossing guard has been implemented during school days, starting and ending, many dangerous hours of the day remain with traffic.

Cars often disregard the designated speed limit of 30 MPH because of the lack of lights. And so, it would be in Beacon's best interest to install light-up crosswalk signs for pedestrians to ensure a safe crossing.

You can see this sort of sign along Downtown Fishkill, for example.

In October of 2024, a fatal hit-and-run occurred in Marlborough, just across the bridge, taking the lives of pedestrians Donna Cristallo and Stephen Celuch. 9W was the road on which they were killed.

In 2021, it was recorded over 7,000 pedestrians died and over 60,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes.

Why wait until a fatality occurs in our town? Let's better ensure the safety of our people. Let's not put ourselves or our loved ones at risk.

We hope you'll support this endeavor to make Beacon safer for all the people who love it so.
