Blocked View of the Fremont Bridge

Blocked View of the Fremont Bridge
The Issue
The proposed Fremont Apartment development will obstruct the view of the Fremont Bridge from Fields Park—an iconic view of a bridge that was purposefully built with aesthetics in mind. This impacts ALL Portlanders, not just those of us in the Pearl.
The public greenway along the river behind the proposed building may meet minimum standards established by Portland Parks & Recreation, but it pinches down to 12.5 feet at its narrowest. Compare that to the 18 foot walkway behind WFP.
The footprint of the building exceeds the standard 200’ x 200’ block size by more than 30’. That results in a building that is too massive and too tall for the lot size. Additionally, the building does not conform to the setback requirement from the river which limits the height of buildings along the river.
The proposed building will be built on the south lot line of the property which will likely result in other development to the south including Centennial Mills to build on the south lot lines as well thus constricting any existing view spaces and walkways such as the north side of WFP.
