Dear NYC DOE, DOB and NYCSCA Leadership,

We are requesting complete replacement of the 13 escalators at Stuyvesant High School as an urgent priority!

As parents, students, staff, alumni, and friends of Stuyvesant High School we are deeply concerned about student safety. The escalator connecting floors 2 and 4 at Stuyvesant High School catastrophically malfunctioned in September 2018 sending several students to the hospital with serious injuries. We are lucky no lives were lost. The subsequent DOE closure of this escalator is felt daily by over 3000 students who must change classes across a ten-story building, in only 5 minutes, ten times per day.

The remaining 12 escalators have been shut down repeatedly this year for repairs and safety concerns, most recently on March 24th by a DOE safety inspector. These escalators are in need of constant retrofitting due to that fact that they were originally installed when the building was constructed in 1992, making them now over 27 years old (so old that this model of escalator is not even manufactured anymore!). Breakdowns are frequent, and more importantly, these older escalators do not have the safety features common to newer models.

Aside from the escalators, there are only three banks of stairs and two small elevators for 3300  students, 200+ staff members, a D75 program, and a Battery Park City community program that operates after school until late in the evening. When the school opened it had a thousand less students and did not operate the way it does now (7 days a week and with year-round with community programs).

The building was simply not designed to move so many people at the same time without the escalators, and when they break down it negatively affects instruction.

In the interest of student and staff safety, we urge you to conduct an immediate feasibility study and to develop a concrete plan of action that includes replacement of all the escalators in the building with more modern, safer, and reliable designs with timely expediency.
