This is not a new problem that is getting highlighted in Bangalore. The "Bangalore Lakes" have always made not just national news, but also International news on many occasions and that is not for good reasons. The notorious toxicity of Bangalore lakes is not a new problem (The burning lakes of Bangalore).

If that was not enough, a recent video circulating in social media from one of the most prominent Lake in Bangalore "Kaikondrahalli Lake" on Sarjapur Road is "ALARMING" and that is still an understatement. The untreated sewage water entering this lake has been becoming toxic and that is causing some dangerous levels of damage to the enormous natural and biodiverse ecosystem there.

The Kaikondrahalli lake has always been a little Birding paradise. Over the course of many years, the amount of birds that this lake has attracted has been immense. A little more than 100 species of birds have been recorded in this lake like Ducks, Cormorants, Herons, Storks, Darters, Jackanas, Warblers, Babblers, Barbets, Orioles Etc., to name a few. The reason for such wide varieties of birds to flock around here is because of the abundant Biodiversity that this lake offers. The forest area on one side and the huge lake with the abundant source of Fish, Toads, Frogs, Snakes, Insects. Also the Flora life over there also attracts a completely different set of birds like Sunbirds, Flycatchers, Flowerpeckers, Bee-Eaters Etc..

Now coming back to the issue in hand. As the video clearly shows, the increasing levels of toxicity is causing some mass deaths of birds in that lake. It is noted that numerous "Spot Billed Ducks" are turning up dead in this lake and lately the lake has been looking like a lake of dead bodies indeed as described in that video. Also, the lake has been becoming a bit sludgy and the birds are not even able to move in the lake anymore. They are dying in flocks by choking.

This petition is to raise awareness and to get the BWSSB and BBMP and Bangalore Development Authorities to act on this on immediate priority basis to help in restoring the Biodiversity.

It may look like a simple issue of a few birds dying. However, looking at the bigger picture. There is an entire layer of a particular food chain getting abolished and as a result, the resulting "Abnormal Biodiversity" could cause many unforeseen cascading effects.
