BBC Studios to stop using AI to restore Classic Doctor Who

The Issue

Since 2018, the BBC and BBC Studios have been releasing classic Doctor Who on Blu-ray in season sets. These sets have been a landmark for quality in how they present the show in upscaled HD. These shows were produced on standard definition videotape. It doesn't have to have full HD detail especially if it didn't exist in the first place.

In recent months, with the releases of Season 13 and Season 21, Peter Crocker (the video restorer of the sets) has started using AI upscalers to turn the content into "true" HD. This "restoration", however, is a lie. Now the sets are full of AI smear and slop, turning details into something else, creating new details out of thin air, changing actors' faces and absolutely destroying whatever detail is in the image.

This is absurd. This is abhorrent. The BBC needs to stop allowing this to happen. The people that buy these expensive sets deserve better. Decisions like this is what actively makes people keep their money. Please, if anyone else agrees with these grievances, please sign this petition.

If it is any way possible, the BBC and BBC Studios should supply replacements discs for owners of Season 13 and Season 21, to correct this inane decision of "restoration". That is what your audience deserves.

I also want to say that no one should go harassing anyone at the BBC, BBC Studios or the BBC DVD helpline. This needs to be handled maturely and politely, yet firmly and strongly. Everyone who works on these Collection sets are some of the most talented people and I am grateful for their work and continue to do so. Make your voice heard to the BBC as well as the Restoration Team!
