BBC: Stop promoting beef on cookery shows

BBC: Stop promoting beef on cookery shows
The Issue
Meat production is one of the principal drivers of the climate emergency. It causes 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions globally, making it the second biggest cause of emissions after fossil fuels. When it comes to the destruction of nature, meat is also a fundamental problem. The World Wildlife Fund found that 60% of biodiversity loss is down to meat-based diets. Quite simply, if the human race wants to try and save the ecosystems on which all life on Earth depends - including ourselves - we need to stop eating meat. Indeed, research from the University of Oxford backs this up, concluding that the single biggest thing any of us can do to combat the worst of this crisis is to cut out meat and dairy. Cows are the worst livestock for the environment, due to their size and the vast amount of land required to grow their feed. In light of all this science, it makes no sense for the BBC, as a public broadcaster, to continue to promote the cooking and eating of beef on its cookery shows. As its mission statement says, it exists "to act in the public interest..." It cannot be in the public interest to ignore all the peer-reviewed science that shows beef consumption is threatening our continued existence on this planet. Please promote plant-based cookery instead!
