The Radio Times recently reported that the BBC have yet to recommission the Great British Sewing Bee and that the show seems to be facing the axe.
Those signing and sharing this petition wish to convince the BBC that this brilliant show should be recommissioned. In fact in light of recent gloomy events (Brexit, Trump, RIP Victoria Wood et al, and the Bake Off going to Channel 4) the Sewing Bee is just the kind of thing they should and need to continue making!
Not only is the Great British Sewing Bee a model of the Reithian philosophy - informing, entertaining and educating, but it demonstrates the benefits of mindful making and creativity, and challenges sexism (the gentle art of needlework is incredibly tough, plus men can do it too). It is the perfect antidote to the current climate of uncertainty. This programme is an oasis of calm embroidered with double-entendre (courtesy of the marvellous Ms.Winkleman) and needs to be recommissioned.
Please BBC don't let the Sewing Bee unravel like the Bake Off, Britain needs you to save the Sewing Bee. #savetheGBSB
I am writing on behalf of all the people who have signed this petition to ask the BBC to reconsider your decision not to recommission the Great British Sewing Bee.
As this petition shows in these unsettling times, the Sewing Bee is just the kind of thing the BBC should and needs to continue making.
The programme not only informs, entertains and educates, but it demonstrates the benefits of mindful making and creativity, and challenges sexism by championing the gentle art of needlework and shows men and women sewing together. It is the perfect antidote to the current climate of uncertainty.
We know the ratings for the GBSB dropped in the last series, so this is probably part of your motivation not to recommission the show. However as several commentators have has pointed out last year the GBSB was moved from a slot in February (cosy, stay inside watch Hygge telly primetime) to July (stay outside and enjoy the sunshine) so it is not comparative to say the show had lost viewing figures as this isn't comparing like with like.
We also appreciate that in light of cuts to you funding and the Bake Off move, Love Productions may have priced the BBC out of recommissioning the Sewing Bee. We hope that you will be able to continue dialogue with them and find a way to recommission the show.
