Include average cycle times in local BBC travel bulletins

The Issue

We're in a time of climate breakdown where a report, which has just been released, suggests that children living within 50m of Oxford's most polluted roads will have an up to 14% reduction in the development of their lungs.

It is imperative that BBC Oxford leads the way to highlight the mainstream alternative to cars in this so-called cycling city.

We are asking along with each travel bulletin broadcast throughout the day, that the presenter includes the average travel times by cycle into and around the city.

At present, the bulletins are biased towards motor vehicle users, and including cycling times will go a long way to highlighting the efficiency of travelling by bike into and around the city.

Over the past weeks, 1000s of trees have been planted in the city of Oxford to help fight the climate crisis. This will sadly be pointless if we also do not massively reduce our carbon emissions too.

Oxford is a world leader - always has been, and hopefully always will be.

Our hope is that BBC Oxford will lead the way on this so many local stations around the country have a benchmark to follow.

Encouraging more people out of cars and onto bike just by allowing them to know how quick their journey could be will go a long way, what with the tree planting and all, to fighting the climate crisis.
