BBB Initiative: Build Baldwin Better!
The Issue
My name is Jeremy Perez, and I am a college student writing to advocate for the renovation of the basketball courts at Baldwin Park in Concord, California.
For many years, I have been playing basketball at Baldwin Park every week. It is more than just a place to exercise—it is where I spend time with friends, connect with my community, and enjoy a sport that keeps me active and motivated. However, over time, the condition of the basketball courts has significantly worsened and is now becoming unsafe for everyone who uses them.
The court surfaces are cracked and uneven, creating serious hazards for players and increasing the risk of injuries. The basketball rims are rusted, and the overall condition of the courts shows clear signs of neglect. What was once a central recreational space for our community is now in urgent need of repair and renovation.
This issue affects not only me and the many players who use the courts regularly, but also the broader Baldwin Park community—including families, children, and local residents who come to the park for recreation and connection. Baldwin Park has always been an important gathering place, and maintaining safe, accessible recreational spaces is essential to supporting a healthy and engaged community.
Investing in the renovation of these basketball courts would have a meaningful impact. Updated and safer courts would encourage more people—both young and old—to stay active, spend time outdoors, and strengthen community relationships. Research has shown that improved parks and recreational facilities can increase community engagement, promote better physical and mental health, and contribute to safer neighborhoods.
I respectfully urge the City Council of Concord and the local Parks Department to prioritize a full renovation of the Baldwin Park basketball courts. By restoring this space, the city would be investing in the well-being and future of our community.
Please join me in signing this petition to help ensure that Baldwin Park’s basketball courts are updated, safe, and enjoyable for everyone. Together, we can give Baldwin Park the court it deserves.
