At the onset of the Spring 2021 semester, the Baylor Office of Access and Learning Accommodation announced it would be suspending its shuttle service and replacing that accommodation with an option to purchase a parking pass. Until this point, the shuttle service has been crucial in allowing disabled Baylor student to navigate a sprawling campus.

The substitute offered by the university -- purchasing a parking pass that gives access to the visitor/faculty/staff spots on campus -- is a poor substitute for true access. Not every disabled student can drive, or chooses to. requiring the purchasing of a pass also places a financial burden previously not an issue for students, as the shuttle service was included in our tuition.

More than that, the program was a symbol of a university willing to work beyond their legal requirements of accommodation to create an equitable home for Baylor students in different bodies. The university is choosing to reconstruct a barrier of access, and the consequences of that will be borne in the bodies of disabled students who must push to navigate the campus and arrive to class late, aching, and exhausted. Sign this petition and reach out to the administration to let them know you care about attending a university that is accessible, safe, and equitable for each of your peers.

Linked here is a great article from The Lariat detailing the decisions and its impact: https://baylorlariat.com/2021/01/21/suspension-of-disability-shuttle-service-hinders-students/
