City of Baxter Permit to Keep Chickens

The Issue

My daughter is 9 years old and has always wanted to live on a farm. We are (newer) residents of Baxter, Minnesota. In light of the current situation she is home from school and decided to do a research project on chickens. She looked up getting a permit and obtained permission from both our neighbors to build a small coop and keep a couple chickens. What a great learning opportunity for her! Unfortunately when I called, we learned that our Baxter address is not eligible for the Brainerd permit. In Baxter NO chickens are allowed.

We are using this as an opportunity to teach her about Democracy and how it works! Please help us by signing our online petition to allow chickens in the city ordinances of Baxter, MN.

Brainerd allows up to 4 chickens in residential neighborhoods IF written permission is given by all neighbors. There are no roosters allowed. The permit is $30.00 a year which generates income for the city. The link for the permit is below.

Minneapolis also allows chickens to be kept in city limits. Their rules are also included below.

It is time for Baxter Minnesota to change the law and allow chickens to be kept in city limits if certain rules and guidelines are in place. A small chicken coop with limited chickens allowed will provide our family with fresh eggs-- they also eat ticks which is a huge bonus! As residents we know we are not alone in this! Please help us change this law! We need to create a petition and bring it to the city council when they meet (the first and third Tuesday of every month).

Thank you!

Raising Chickens in Minneapolis
Chickens are versatile – they lay high-quality eggs, feast on unwanted pests, and before you know it, can become beloved members of the family.

How the City of Minneapolis Supports Raising Chickens
The Minneapolis City Council in partnership with the Minneapolis Animal Care and Control Department has made it easier and safer than ever to keep chickens and other eligible fowl in the City of Minneapolis.
The City allows residents to apply for a permit to keep backyard chickens on their property. Before applying for a permit, please read the full ordinance language. The complete list of rules and regulations are located in the Minneapolis Code of Ordinances, (Title 4, Chapter 70, Section 70.10). A summary is available in the link below.
