Bata-Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa? Break the Taboo: Demand Comprehensive Sex Education
The Issue
The lack of comprehensive sex education remains a critical issue in the Philippines, leading to serious consequences such as teenage pregnancy. The debate surrounding its implementation has intensified, particularly following President Marcos' threat to veto the proposed bill on sex education. Given the significant impact of this issue, our advocacy, "Bata-Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa? Break the Taboo: Demand Comprehensive Sex Education," seeks to promote the proper implementation of sex education rather than its removal. Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness, foster open discussions, and advocate for policies that ensure young individuals receive accurate and age-appropriate information on sexual and reproductive health.
The importance of knowing people who would benefit from sex education can be thoroughly studied by different groups of people that can help young people develop healthy relationship, make decisions carefully and reduce the risk of violence of abuse.
Understanding who benefits from sex education highlights its importance in society. Primary Beneficiaries are students and young people, with sex education young students can able to understand themselves sexually. By exploring your sexuality, you allow yourself the freedom to try new things, be open to new ideas, and grow as a person. It allows you the opportunity to fully connect with your most authentic self and avoid the pain of pretending to be something or someone you’re not (PsyD & PsyD, 2023).
According to the article entitled The Importance of Access to Comprehensive Sex Education, Parents have major essential roles in a teenager's life. They are the first one's who taught a child about themselves. Sex education is important for parents because it helps children develop healthy relationships, make informed decisions, and practice safe sexual behaviors. It also helps parents understand their children's development and tailor conversations to their need.
Importance of teaching sex education is to promote respect for sexual variety, but these concept wouldn't be possible without the presence of educators that will teach the importance and concept of sex education. The teachers can benefit from sex education by teaching it, helping the students or adolescence become more knowledgeable and skills in teaching sexual health.
However, current President Marcos Jr. has threatened to veto a bill that promotes sex education, a critical initiative and an important information for empowering young Filipinos with knowledge about reproductive health, consent, and safety. Denying this education puts our youth, including students and clueless ones at risk of misinformation, unintended or even early pregnancies, and preventable diseases. We must act now, or such problems will never be solved.
We must be the voices that the youth of this generation needs! So how can we help?
Raise awareness – Share the importance of comprehensive sex education on social media. This simple yet advocating action makes progress!
Join advocacy groups – Support organizations fighting for reproductive rights and youth empowerment, through social media or even in real life.
Start petitions – Through this, we can demonstrate widespread public support for the needed sex education, pressuring lawmakers and President Marcos Jr. to reconsider the veto and acknowledge the importance of the bill by showing that many Filipinos value evidence-based learning.
Education is a right, not a privilege, especially for youth and students like us. Without sex education, the youth of these days will not have enough knowledge about what to do and what to avoid in terms of sex. Let’s stand together to ensure our youth receive the knowledge they need for a healthier future!
