An Assistant Professor at St Xavier’s University, Kolkata, was forced to resign in October 2021 on the grounds that she had put up pictures wearing a bikini on her personal Instagram page, which was discovered by a student at the time. The father of the student released a letter which claimed that the professor had “posed in a sexually explicit way causing deliberate public exposure’”. Additionally, the university too sided with the guardian stating the professor had caused “immense damages to the unquestionable high image and reputation of SXUK”.

The points to be noted here are,

1. The professor had uploaded these photos on her personal IG page, which is a private page
2. Additionally, whether it be a private page or not, the personal IG handle of any individual has no link with the prestige of the university, and nor does it warrant the distress of a guardian to an extent that the professor be relieved of her duties
3. Finally, every individual has the right to express themselves as they deem fit in their personal space, and as long as it doesn’t explicitly involve the said University or guardian (it’s understandable if the University got offended at a professor posing in a bikini within the University grounds), no authority figure has the right to morally castigate a person for such causes
4. These are the basic tenets of education which any university should be instilling in their students, and such an incident points to a an otherwise aspirational University becoming a hotbed for moral policing as opposed to being a safe and progressive environment for teachers and students alike.

It has already been a while since the professor was forced to resign. It’s only now that the incident has been covered in the news. As a rational human being first and an alumnus of St. Xavier’s University second,I find it deeply disturbing that the institution has acted in the manner it has. This is a petition to provide Prof Guha with an unconditional apology from the University authorities for handling the case in the manner they have, and launching disciplinary action against VC Felix Raj and the committee for the same.
