Will Baseball Remain Our National Pastime?

Together we need to GROW THE GAME TO SAVE THE GAME!!

Save the Game™ (STG) is a National Grass Roots Movement led by former college baseball standouts, Kevin Gallagher, Pat Geoghegan and former MLB player Jeff Frye.  

This Petition is designed to collect 1 million signatures from fans across America to bring awareness to Major League Baseball that change is needed in and around the Game if we are to grow participation in youth baseball and revive interest in MLB.

The future fans of Baseball and customers of MLB are our Youth! Without them the game will lose it’s status in America. This generation has been brought up on technology and seeks fast paced, action-oriented entertainment activities.  We aim to address this need as it relates to Baseball.

Our concern, and that of many people inside MLB, is that baseball in America could become a second-tier sport in as little as 10-15 years. 

As the aging fan base (50% over 57 years old) moves on, trends and statistics suggest that unless changes are made there will not be enough interest from the younger generation to support the game in 10-15 years.  

We plan to work with MLB to provide a more accessible and entertaining product to draw more boys and girls to watch the game. And at the Youth Level provide Tools to parents and coaches to teach them properly, so the kids hit the ball, have fun and stay with the game.

We have been encouraged by MLB to capture the Voice of America by collecting 1m signatures that show the concern across the country for the health of Our Game.

So, the ask here is for you, the American Baseball Fan to sign this petition and share it on social media, so we can work with you and MLB to find solutions to Grow the Game and ensure that baseball maintains its proper place on the American landscape for years to come!

OVERVIEW

Over the last two decades, the game has seen the participation rate at the Little League Level decline at an annual percentage rate of approximately 2% - 3% annually. 

Why?

1. One reason is that Community Baseball has disappeared and been replaced by Travel Ball which is a great platform for the exceptional athlete but it leaves the less talented kids with nowhere to go except away from baseball and to other sports.
2. At the same time, the game at the MLB level has changed to a Power Game which has significantly slowed the pace of the game. The direct result is that MLB has been seeing a continuing trend of record lows in attendance, decreasing TV viewership and overall fan interest over the past 10 years or more. 
3. In addition, this departure of our youth is being driven in part by coaches and mentors teaching the use of the launch angle/power swing to hit home-runs as they do at the MLB level. 

This type of swing is very difficult for those in MLB and when taught to the average kid it results in too many swings and misses and kids will quit. When a kid quits, MLB loses a fan and eventually a customer.

These 3 points are the main reasons that the Youth of America have increasingly lost interest in the game, being driven to other sports or entertainment venues.

This combination of events can cause the unthinkable to happen – Baseball, and thus MLB, could become irrelevant in less than 10 years. 

These TRENDS MUST BE REVERSED if baseball is to stay relevant in this country. Even longtime fans are dissatisfied with the lack of action that the launch angle style of hitting has wrought on the game, which has impacted their attendance and viewership habits.  If adults are not engaged, will the youth be influenced the same way?  

We must increase our Youths interest in Baseball! We cannot afford to lose an entire generation!

We have garnered the attention of MLB with our movement.  BUT WE NEED YOUR HELP TOO!!

We currently have thousands of fans, dozens of current and former MLB Players, Coaches, GM’s, Executives, Scouts, Nationally Syndicated Journalists, Radio and TV personalities supporting this vitally important movement. We have hundreds more we are working with to support the movement.  BUT WE NEED YOU, the average American baseball fan, to make this happen with us.

Our Plan Overview:

We believe that MLB CAN PLAY A VITAL ROLE in re-energizing the youth of America by supporting how the youth are taught the game, as well as how they are entertained by the sport.   This generation has been brought up on technology and speed and have many options to choose from when seeking entertainment.

We will meet with MLB and bring new and innovative ideas to help.

SOME OF THE CHANGES WE WILL RECOMMEND AT A HIGH LEVEL

• Work with MLB to encourage change to the way the game is currently played.
• Work with MLB to provide Tools to Parents and Coached to Teach the Game Properly
• Work with Little League and other Youth leagues and provide an App with a simple process for Parents to Teach kids to make contact with the ball
• Introduce new ideas to involve all players on a team to keep them involved
• Provide new ideas on speeding up youth games to prevent boredom in inspire interest
• Create a Code of Conduct Contract to be signed by MLB and youth individuals around Leadership, Teamwork and Hustle.
• Organize more affordable and meaningful Stadium events
• Start on a wide scale Little League for Girls
• Provide a platform for fan interaction with MLB to improve their relationship
• Build a stronger bond between MLB and the youth players
• Create a program to certify Hitting Instructors to MLB approval to protect parents
• Introduce Virtual Reality Training Tools and Entertainment Tools for Kids and Parents
• Utilize Virtual Reality Baseball experiences (Virtual Stadium viewing)
• Meet the kids where they are… online and Social Media
• Work with new and existing agencies to increase the involvement of the African American Community and inner-city youth.
• Build more “entertainment” around the game that is aligned with youth interests
