My school, BHS (Bartlett High School) is a school in Memphis, TN, where the Confederate flag is outly glorified by students in the forms of flags on the back of their trucks, belt buckles, t-shirts, hats, and jackets as a way of honoring their “southern heritage” their pride blinds them of seeing that that flag was their ancestors fighting to keep slavery in a time of white supremacy. We feel underrepresented and our feelings aren’t taken into consideration when they put the pride of their past on display. Though we have not really made a formal complaint before we have spoken with our peers and argued about the meaning behind the flag and it always leads to a sense of black vs white. We feel that to better understand the hideous connotation between said flag and the Confederacy trying to keep the institution of slavery all students at BHS should spend June 19th learning about slavery and the ties to how black people are marginalized and oppressed still in modern times. Racial Inequality for black people still exists in education, unemployment, medicine, and many more. We can’t even feel safe in our own place of education, we feel suffocated by it, by all the kids who say all lives matter not knowing black lives have never mattered. Ban that flag and let us breathe. BHS consider us, don’t ignore us, don’t overlook us, and take away that godawful flag. It is no better than the Nazi flag.
