Thousands of brave men and women are putting their lives on the line for their communities, and our homes, battling huge fires. And many of them are doing it tough themselves.
Now is the right time to show these Rural Fire Service volunteers that they are not alone. These heroes, like my son, Timothy are putting their lives and work on hold and putting themselves in harms way to protect our homes.
Many volunteer firefighters have to give up work, or run the risk of losing their jobs so they can go and help fight fires. And self-employed firies give up their own business to volunteer and help others.
I’m asking Barry O’Farrell to set up a fighting fund for volunteer firefighters. Firies who face hardship as a result of lost wages could apply to the fund to cover essentials like rent or food. It’s not a lot, but it would make a huge difference to those doing it tough battling these natural disasters. My son doesn't need the money, but I want the people he is fighting alongside to know we've got their back, financially at least.
These are brave Australians who’d do anything for others in need. We can help their contribution by creating a fighting fund to support their work, and the work of rural fire brigades.
