Save UNE MARC

"The MSC established the Marine Animal Rehabilitation and Conservation (MARC) program in 2001 to assist in the effort to rescue, rehabilitate and release marine mammals–specifically, gray and harbor seals, which are native to North Atlantic waters but were threatened with dwindling numbers. Over the years, with the involvement of MARC and other partners along the Eastern seaboard, the seal colonies have significantly rebounded. Therefore, MSC will no longer rehabilitate marine mammals."

This is the message all the University of New England students, alumni, and surrounding community received early this morning regarding the closing of a beloved program on the campus. This program has grown from its early roots in so many ways and has helped hundreds of marine animals, such as seals, sea turtles and harbor porpoises. This program has not only helped these marine animals but has given current students at the university a unique hands-on experience with rehabilitation and conservation efforts. Many of the students and community members involved are volunteers and devote countless hours to MARC. It is nearly impossible to include how much this program means to everyone, but here are a few quotes from past students and other community members that will show how much this program has meant to them.

" MARC definitely helped me to find my path In life I will never forget the experiences I had there, and the lives I helped to save " (T. Richardson)

"It's the main reason some people go to the school." (A. Rossi)

"I work as a Northeast fisheries observer. How did I get this job? By being a part of MARC..." (S. Petrus)

This program benefits more than just the animals, but thousands of people and the environment as well. This program was used for rehabilitation efforts, public education, and research on marine animals and the habitat in which live. We hope this will bring back our beloved program, or at the very least allow us to receive a better understanding of the reasoning behind its sudden closing. Thank you for your time.
