There are so many of us dog owners that just don't know where to go, in Barnstaple and around North Devon, to let our dogs safely off the lead. And there are many reasons why we should be able to do so, but we just are unable to.

Many of the factors include; dog owners with disabilities, deafness in dogs, blindness in dogs, young dogs, elderly dogs, dogs still in training, dogs with naturally poor recall (with outside/real life distractions), nearby livestock, nearby fast moving rivers, nearby moving vehicles and busy roads. All of these possible factors are reasons why some people can't let their dog off the lead, run about and play with other dogs. 

As Barnstaple residents with two big dogs we have already experienced issues when we have let our dogs off lead. And now feel we have nowhere left to go. For example, our dogs love to swim in the sea but on the very few beaches we are allowed to take our dogs, we have found out that there are fields of livestock with no secure fencing that is easily accessible from the beach. We have also stopped letting them off in Griggs Field, Fremington as well as people leaving the gates open, there are gaps in the perimeter that allow the dogs to run into the road and housing areas.
