Provide a Pedestrian crossing at the Finchley Road/Hoop Lane junction

The Issue

There is currently no pedestrian crossing at the junction between Finchley Road and Hoop Lane, London NW11.

The Finchley Road footpath is very busy, with users including families and young people travelling to local schools (including Garden Suburb Infant and Junior, Golders Hill, Alyth Gardens and Henrietta Barnett Schools), workers heading to/from Golders Green tube station and local residents/workers.

Where Finchley Road meets Hoop Lane there is a busy, traffic light controlled, junction. However there is no pedestrian crossing to allow pedestrians to safely cross Hoop Lane, which means that pedestrians have to dash across the road between the changes in the traffic lights.

This is very dangerous as the traffic is busy on both Finchley Road and Hoop Lane, with vehicles turning in all directions. Vehicles also often jump the traffic lights.

My family cross this junction four times a day taking my 5 year old son to school. Until yesterday I had accepted that this is just how it is. However, yesterday there was an incident where two cars jumped the lights at speed and my son was very nearly hit by one of the cars.

This really brought home how crazy it is that there is no safe pedestrian crossing at this junction. I can’t think of another busy junction that is so poorly served.

I’m therefore petitioning Barnet Council to introduce an appropriate pedestrian crossing at this junction before anyone is seriously injured or killed.
