My son’s name is Zak. He is 6 months old, and he has Down syndromes.
As a parent, I want to do as much research as I can and have as many resources as are available to help me care for my son, but when I was recently talking to a friend who has a toddler with Down syndrome, she told me something both frustrating and disheartening. She told me about a recent trip to her local Barnes & Noble in search of children’s books for her son about Down syndrome as well as books about the syndrome geared toward parents. She was unable to locate any books about the subject in the store. When she asked a clerk for help, she was told that they do not carry any of the books in store and she could only purchase them online.
Barnes & Noble carries a vast array of books about ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia in stores, but apparently they do not think that books on Down Syndrome -- which affects 400,000 people in the United States -- deserve shelf space. Parents and loved ones of people with Down syndrome deserve easy access to informative books on the subject. As a mother of a child with Down syndrome, I want to make sure information is available to society on this condition. There is a lot of false information about Down syndrome on the internet and I feel that having books easily available to people will help debunk all of the misinformation out there.
That is why I am asking Barnes & Noble to please stock books, for both children and adults, pertaining to Down syndrome on your shelves.
*Dec 31, 2015* Update
Since starting this petition changes have been made!!! Barnes and Nobles has answer our request and is stocking the books we asked for. Along with this a new book has been written by a friend, called The Parents Guide to Down Syndrome. This book is filled with not only statistics and information but also quotes and advice from actual parents. This book will be released tomorrow Jan 1, 2016 and Barnes and Noble will have it on their shelves! I am proud to have been a part of this and to have a quote in the book as well! Thank you all who supported us and made this possible!
