The Issue

#IHaveRoom has risen out of support for the refugees fleeing Syria due to the atrocities they have faced under the regime of Bashar Assad, and the increasing attacks at the hands of ISIS. The overwhelming cry that we must first take care of our homeless veterans resulted in dialogue culminating in the firm belief that we can solve both issues.

We the people have the room to accept the proposed 10,000 Syrian refugees, while also eliminating the homeless veteran problem. As citizens of the United States, and global stewards, we recognize that we are all in this together. This will be achieved by offering temporary housing solutions by way of community hosts. Allowing citizens the opportunity to host will reduce the cost of housing, provide a sense of community, and allow both the host & the hosted to share stories and learn from the life experiences of each other. Additionally, veteran homelessness is an important factor regarding the value of the communities and the cost to tax payers; from increased healthcare costs (as much as $44,000 per year) to lower property values. Providing permanent stable housing reduces the burden on the tax payer and increases community value. Rather than continue to wait for solutions to both of these issues, we have decided to take action.

We have signed this petition in support of the proposed rehoming of 10,000 Syrian refugees and eliminating our veteran homeless problem. Contact information for those who personally are able to offer shelter to the refugees and homeless veterans will be compiled to create a database of potential hosts who have undergone background screening and meet certain criteria.  While there are already programs in place to assist our veteran population, educating the community to be better equipped to assist is imperative. Proposals will be created to provide long-term solutions, including interim placements with community members. Creating a community support system and foundation is integral to the success of refugee assimilation and the homeless reintegration into a functioning society. For our veterans, this will offer immediate relief by providing shelter with a host who is able to assist the individual(s) in gaining access to veterans benefits. By presenting proposals for solutions within the community, we believe it will encourage community engagement and responsibility, as well as raise awareness for these issues.

Petition information and proposals will be sent to state representatives for each state where signatures are received, additionally, information will be forwarded to the VA, PRM and UNHCR. Feedback/Questions/Ideas can be sent to: ihaveroom2015@gmail.com
