President Obama: Please Relieve Daniel Ashe for Conflict of Interest in USFWS Directorship

President Obama: Please Relieve Daniel Ashe for Conflict of Interest in USFWS Directorship

The Issue

Mr. Daniel Ashe, the 16th Director of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service has been sitting idly on the rule to list the lion as threatened since its proposal in 2011. Even after the demise of Zimbabwe's national treasure, Cecil the lion, he has not done anything to protect the endangered lion or determine whether Walter Palmer can be charged under the Lacey Act.  Here in the US, he has not prohibited the shipping of animals into the country even as a direct and immediate response to the outrage of the senseless killing of Cecil, a protected lion by Palmer, a US hunter and SCI member in Zimbabwe. This is a blatant demonstration that Daniel M. Ashe, the head of the nation's principal Federal agency dedicated to the conservation of fish and wildlife and their habitats, is biased and prejudiced to the Palmer case. The reason behind this is his direct participation and support of The Safari Club International. How can the USFWS do such a disservice to the country when US taxpayers fund Ashe's position and the agency's operations? As an avid hunter of wildlife, it will be difficult for Mr. Dan Ashe to be impartial to Cecil the lion's case. Due to his affiliation to SCI (Safari Club International) and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, he cannot be objective to the conservation of fish and wildlife and their habitat and promote the welfare and protection of animals. Mr. Ashe needs to be accountable to the people and not to the SCI. For once, he should not allow politics, the hunting lobby, and an argument of “hunting is conservation” interfere with listing of lion as endangered. We ask that Mr. Ashe of the USFWS be accountable to the people and not to the Safari Club International or any hunting clubs he belongs. The tragedy of Cecil's death will not be forgotten by the people until the USFWS brings Walter Palmer to justice. Mr. Ashe of the USFWS owes it to the people to help prosecute Palmer, list the lion as endangered and not be influenced with his ties with the SCI. Please Mr. President, make the USFWS transparent in protecting animals and not trophy hunting. Please relieve Dan Ashe due to conflict of interest and for  violation of ethics. Thank you.
