Save Bears Ears, one of the most important cultural sites in North America.

Save Bears Ears, one of the most important cultural sites in North America.
The Issue
Home to more than 100,000 precious and irreplaceable cultural sites, an area in southern Utah known as the Bears Ears is in danger: "Looting, grave robbing, ignorant visitation, oil drilling, mining, and irresponsible motorized use threaten to erase American history and damage a truly remarkable cultural landscape forever" (bearsearscoalition.org). President Obama, under the Antiquities Act, you have the power to protect one of the most extensive archaeological sites in the United States by making it a National Monument. Bears Ears is home to cliff dwellings, villages, and thousands of petroglyphs. To many people it is a sacred place, and to all is a part of our land's unique history. It's now or never, as these sites become better-known and therefore more vulnerable to theft: "There have been six confirmed looting incidents in the past six months, and at least two dozen over the past five years. In one, a vandal used a rock saw to remove a petroglyph; in one this year someone dug up a pristine ceremonial chamber, or kiva, that had never been professionally excavated... [The BLM] employs just two law enforcement officers to patrol 1.8 million acres" (The Washington Post). By making Bears Ears a National Monument you will, like great presidents before you, protect one of our most precious national treasures.
