Be a patriot, and please sign the petition below to ask President Barack Obama to recognize the Lincoln Highway with its intended purpose, a memorial to President Abraham Lincoln.
On September 14, 1913, the Lincoln Highway Association, led by automobile manufacturing leaders Carl G. Fisher, who developed the Indianapolis 500 race, and Henry B. Joy, President of the Packard Motor Company, established a driving route across the United States from New York City to San Francisco. The Lincoln Highway Association announced the mapping of that route on that day in a Proclamation of the Route of Lincoln Highway. The Lincoln Highway Association dedicated the route to the memory of Abraham Lincoln and to the American people on October 31, 1913.
The purposes of the road were to establish the most direct route on improved roads between New York City and San Francisco and take up the ". . . patriotic burden of establishing, broadening, straightening, maintaining and beautifying such highway to the end that it may become an appropriate memorial to the great martyred patriot whose name it bears." The Proclamation from 1913 also reads: ". . . therefore be it resolved, that the Lincoln Highway now is and henceforth shall be an existing memorial in tribute to the immortal Abraham Lincoln."
The Lincoln Highway is the world's largest memorial to President Abraham Lincoln, and the idea for the Lincoln Highway as a memorial to Abraham Lincoln is older than the Lincoln Memorial building in Washington, D.C. It is also the first coast-to-coast improved road in the United States. Only a great president like Abraham Lincoln deserves such an extensive and large memorial. The Lincoln Highway, however, lacks federal recognition for the entire route from New York City to San Francisco.
We, the undersigned, call on President Barack Obama to please recognize the Lincoln Highway as a National Monument.
