President Obama, let's see your proposal to increase Social Security. It is overdue.

I wrote a blog piece titled, "Empty Rhetoric or Will Obama Propose Legislation to Strengthen Social Security?".  The blog points out how President Obama has, in the 2008 election, and most recently in the 2016 election, suggested that we need to increase and strengthen Social Security.  This petition calls on the President to actually submit a legislative proposal, like S.582, to the U.S. House and Senate that would accomplish this campaign rhetoric. We want more than rhetoric, Mr. President, we need a legislative proposal.

Sadly, in stark contrast to the 08' and 16' rhetoric, during his governing years, President Obama actually proposed cutting Social Security benefits as part of a "grand bargain."  And, he can't blame Republican obstructionism because from 2008-2010, Democrats held solid majorities in the house and senate while he was president.  Why didn't he follow through on that campaign pledge in say, 2009?

To ward off the president's attack on Social Security, Bernie Sanders actually proposed S.582, The Social Security Protection Act of 2011.  This is Sanders floor speech.

This is a good template to work with Mr. President.  Give Bernie a call and let's work together because we all agree that, "We can't afford to weaken Social Security. We should be strengthening Social Security. And not only do we need to strengthen its long-term health, it's time we finally made Social Security more generous and increased its benefits so that today's retirees and future generations get the dignified retirement they've earned."

One of the things that makes this legislation difficult to pass is that hedge fund speculators want to privatize Social Security and take a larger cut of senior citizens' retirement funds.  It is a rip-off scheme and they spend large sums of money influencing legislation that would allow them to privatize Social Security.

We know where Bernie Sanders stands.  We have seen nothing but rhetoric from the others.  Will they move beyond the campaign talking points?
