Commercial whaling was banned worldwide by the International Whaling Commission in 1986. However, over 30,000 whales have been killed since then, fisherman illegally hunting and killing over 1,000 whales each year. Seven out of thirteen whale species are now endangered due to whaling. Illegal whalers often go without consequences for their crimes. We need to put higher consequences in place for illegal whalers, as well as more trade sanctions on countries that participate in illegal whaling. This needless killing of whales has to be stopped, and I believe that together we can achieve this goal.
