The issue

This petition advocates for the total ban on generative AI in South Australian schools for both staff and students.

Generative AI is now more powerful than ever, bringing danger to every single person with access to the internet. How? you may be wondering, here is how.

AI Photos and Videos more realistic than ever

These generated images and videos are becoming more realistic than ever, and being used to create things such as child sexual abuse material, defaming sexual and offensive photos/videos, and imagery used to spread dangerous misinformation. This will no doubt be used to threaten and endanger children and adults alike.

Detrimental for the environment

Did you know that ChatGPT uses one bottle of water per 100 words it writes? with its current popularity, it uses hundreds of millions of litres per day. This is because ChatGPT is run on a physical server, a giant computer that needs constant access to electricity and water to keep it from overheating. Think about how many popular AI systems there are, and how much water they each use. Any use of generative AI directly contributes to the current climate crisis.

Privacy concerns

AI chatbots keep any information you give them in their database permanently, even if you request for it to be deleted, this is a major concern particularly for small children as they do not yet have a developed sense of privacy and have and will share personal information with these chatbots.

A proven cause of cognitive decline

Studies show that the constant use of AI in schools is directly contributing to the cognitive decline of students, children and teenagers are actively losing the ability to think for themselves and put in effort to work. They are losing their ability to form proper sentences and to understand media. this is particularly concerning with the rise of misinformation of social media, as young people will become more susceptible to manipulation.

Teachers are also beginning to lose interest in their students' work, and giving outdated or flat out incorrect feedback through both drafts and final grades.

This Technology does not belong in our schools, our community, or our country, we must act before irreversible damage is done.
