I had great expectations for this new article in the Montreal Gazette when I saw the photo of Canadian bank notes, and a headline about gender equity! I foolishly assumed it would talk about the shameful absence of Canadian women on our notes, but I was wrong... Mario Rigante (a senior VP at BMO Bank of Montreal) penned this piece. He argues that financial institutions in Canada should work to improve the services provided to female customers. After all, "It’s the equitable and right thing to do, but it also makes good business sense." says Rigante. You'd think it would be a no-brainer that someone in the banking biz would notice that not a single Canadian woman appears on those coveted bank notes. And that if a bank really wants to get more female customers and meet their needs, it might be a good idea to start by recognizing women exist - and want to see some great Canadian woman honoured on the bills they pull out of their wallets everyday. Enough with all those white, male prime ministers and the Queen and let's see some diversity of these bank notes that supposedly belong to all Canadians and represent who and what we believe important! Are these really the only people in Canadian history we think are worthy of celebrating on our notes? Perhaps leaders in the financial sector in Canada could talk to Mr. Poloz about this issue? Happy International Women's Day!
