Petition updateBank of Canada: Add women from Canadian history to Canadian bank notesJan 8 Deadline: Bank of Canada Survey for Canada 150 Note
Merna ForsterVictoria, BC, Canada
Jan 3, 2015
The Bank of Canada is designing a new bank note to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, and is inviting Canadians to contribute ideas before January 8, 2015. Curiously, the public consultation period is for only about a month, at one of the busiest times of the year! But please don’t miss the opportunity to share your views on who and what will appear on the new note. It will be released on July 1, 2017. You can find out more about the survey and complete the questionnaire here:

The press release about the public consultation indicates the Bank wants to know “what makes you proud to be Canadian, what would best represent Canada’s 150th.” Let’s ensure that Canadian women and our diversity aren’t forgotten again! I hope you will fill out the online questionnaire before January 8th. FYI, the bank note issued for Canada’s centennial depicted Queen Elizabeth II and the centennial logo on the front, and the original Parliament Buildings on the back:

Should Canada 150 be about more than the Fathers of Confederation? The Government of Canada has created a website about the celebrations at http://www.canada150.gc.ca/eng/1342792785740/1342793251811.
The site states:
"Canada 150 (1867-2017) – Strong. Proud. Free.
In 2017, Canadians across the country will celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. The Government of Canada invites Canadians to learn more about the major events that have shaped their country’s history and express their pride in everything that Canada represents – a strong, proud and free nation."
Let’s make sure the expressions of “pride in everything that Canada represents” include pride in the contributions of Canadian women as well as men. (Do you see a lot of women on the Canada 150 website?)
