It's great to see a new story from Yahoo Canada about our campaign! It includes an odd statement about the icebreaker that replaced the only Canadian women who appeared on our bills. Journalist Dene Moore interviewed me this morning, writing the following: “The Minister of Finance is responsible for approving any new bank note, in accordance with the Bank of Canada Act,” says a spokesperson for the Bank of Canada. Josianne Menard says the icebreaker bank notes were part of a series depicting the country’s exploits and accomplishments, “endeavors in which Canadian women and men have contributed.”
This statement from the Bank of Canada is not new, though when I see that icebreaker on the back of the $50 I am not conjuring up the image of a Canadian woman contributing to it in some way! But if I saw a notable woman from Canadian history on the face of one of the bills (say, for example, replacing the portrait of Sir William Lyon Mackenzie King on the $50), I would indeed think I was looking at the portrait of a female historical figure who was being honoured for her contribution to Canada... Thanks again to the Whitehorse City Council for supporting the inclusion of Canadian women on our money, and helping bring more media attention to our campaign.
