Stop collection of Accrued Interest on Loans during Covid 19 grace period

The Issue

Everyone is greatly affected economically by this Covid Pandemic. The Government of the Philippines created Bayanihan Act to help the people to cope up in these trying times. Included in the republic act is the suspension of payments for all type of loans including interests, penalties and other charges. Now BSP implemented an IRR which allows banks and financial institutions to collect accrued interests after the quarantine period, either in lump sum or staggered payment. Many borrowers will be affected greatly if this takes effect on the new due dates. For most borrowers are on a no work no pay status. Most of them already used up their funds for day to day living. The collection of accrued interests on loans will be a nail on the coffin for them. It will contradict the essence of the Bayanihan Act itself. It only allows banks and financial institutions to earn more, while their poor client suffers. The money they will use to pay for the accrued interest can be used instead for basic necessities like food, medicines, and other essential commodities. Banks and financial institutions can earn back these interests when the payments resumes. They will not lose a single cent, for the loan term will be extended and not cancelled. In the end the losing end is still on the consumer side. Let’s be fair.
