Ban wild animal use in Glenwood CSD and all circuses
The Issue
Today, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across a post from Glenwood Community School District (Glenwood CSD) advertising an upcoming circus that uses real wildlife animals for entertainment. As an animal lover, I find this deeply upsetting and unacceptable. Wild animals deserve better than to be treated like mere props for human amusement.
The use of wildlife in circuses is a cruel and outdated practice that subjects animals to immense stress, unhealthy living conditions, and inhumane treatment. Animals such as lions, tigers, elephants, and bears are kept in cages or chains, deprived of their natural habitats and behaviors. Training methods often involve fear tactics and punishment, forcing these magnificent creatures to perform unnatural tricks. This not only harms the animals physically and psychologically but it also sends a damaging message to audiences, particularly children, about the acceptable treatment of animals.
Studies have shown that circus animals suffer from a range of health issues, post-traumatic stress, and shortened lifespans due to poor living conditions and rigorous performance schedules. Furthermore, public sentiment is shifting, with a growing number of people and countries recognizing the ethical issues and moving towards animal-free circuses. Countries such as the Netherlands and India have already enacted bans on wild animal performances, and it's time for Glenwood CSD to follow suit.
By banning the use of real wildlife animals, Glenwood CSD can promote humane and ethical alternatives that focus on human talent and creativity. There are numerous examples of successful, animal-free circuses around the world that showcase the incredible skills of acrobats, jugglers, magicians, and musicians. These performances not only entertain but also inspire audiences, proving that circuses don't need to exploit animals to be successful.
Join me in urging Glenwood CSD to prioritize animal welfare and ethical entertainment. Let us put an end to this outdated practice and ensure a compassionate future for all. Sign this petition to show your support and ask Glenwood CSD to ban the use of real wildlife animals in their circuses. Together, we can make a difference for these animals who cannot speak for themselves.
