Petition updateBAN VAPE SHOPS. Use plain packaging with health warnings and pharmacy outlet onlyVape packaging legally requires statement of risks in addition to those of nicotine addiction

David Seymour is considering changes to labelling of nicotine products. Who knows what is considered, but clearly for vapes there must be more than 'can cause nicotine addiction', along with considerably tighter regulation in other areas but this update just addresses labelling.

Vaping involves inhalation of a combination of heated chemicals designed to deliver nicotine to the bloodstream, but the consumer is not told of any of the contents or the health risks other than the mention of nicotine. Of course they should be, given the chemicals involved. See link below to Australian Government advice about the risks of vaping.

Vape packaging should at the very least have the information that would be legally required if vapes were 'a medication'. Currently the lack of information breaches legal rights of the consumer.

The Medicines Act 1981 and associated Medsafe guidelines mandate that medicines approved for sale are safe and effective. 'Prescribers' must inform patients about a medicine's potential benefits, risks, and adverse effects before obtaining informed consent, while pharmacists are required to provide information on how to use the medicine, potential side effects, and when to seek medical advice.

Some of the required labelling changes considered in this article are likely to be less not more. As the consumer is still only told of nicotine content in vapes, not the other components, known to be toxic and at harmful concentrations, the opposite is obviously urgently needed. The general public know little about this product even though its use is much supported by the government.

Along with clear information about composition and health risks, a little label of lungs with a red cross over them or some such would be appropriate, especially as we still have a school epidemic and young lungs are at risk of irreversible lung changes and other problems. It would not preclude their use by those giving up tobacco, but provide what should be a clear warning. Users are not being told of known risks stated by clinicians and responsible govts - see nice clear Aus online advice:
