Ban use of St. Peter’s facilities as emergency shelter
The Issue
As a concerned parent, I am deeply worried about the recent decision to use the facilities at St. Peter's, a pre-school where my child is enrolled, as an emergency shelter for the homeless. While I believe in supporting those in need, the safety and well-being of our children must always come first.
St. Peter's is a state-certified preschool, and its primary role is to provide a safe learning environment for young children. The sudden transformation of this space into a shelter for the homeless compromises that safety. There are significant concerns regarding the potential exposure of children to hazards. These hazards may include potentially dangerous items that could be accidentally left behind, posing serious health risks if touched or ingested.
We understand the need for emergency shelters; however, choosing a location like St. Peter’s, which is dedicated to young children, is inappropriate. There must be safer alternatives that do not jeopardize the health and safety of children. It is crucial we find a solution that can provide assistance to the homeless without endangering or disrupting educational environments.
We urge local authorities to reconsider the usage of St. Peter's facilities for this purpose. We propose exploring other community centers, churches, or vacant buildings that do not house vulnerable groups like children.
By signing this petition, you are taking a stand for the safety and security of our children and supporting a search for a suitable and safer alternative for emegency shelter accommodations. Please join us in ensuring that the primary function of St. Peter’s as a safe haven for early education is preserved.
