Ban unsupervised fireworks use nationwide
The Issue
Last night, my family experienced a terrifying incident that no parent should ever have to face. In a moment that was meant to be filled with the joy and laughter of Halloween, our evening quickly turned into a nightmare. Unsupervised kids, without a single adult in sight, were setting off fireworks dangerously close to our home. One firework went off unexpectedly and landed directly into my two-year-old's pram. The explosive burned her Halloween costume and pram, leaving a mark not only on her belongings but also on her face and side. It was sheer luck that she wasn't hospitalized, but the trauma of the event has left our family shattered.
Fireworks, while festive, are deadly in the hands of the inexperienced, especially children. Statistics show thousands of incidents annually where fireworks cause injuries, property damage, and in tragic cases, even fatalities. The National Fire Protection Association reports that fireworks are responsible for an estimated 18,500 fires in emergency rooms annually in the U.S., causing numerous injuries, particularly among children.
The time has come for us to address this issue seriously. The unrestricted sale and use of fireworks without proper supervision and safety precautions must end. We propose a nationwide ban on unsupervised fireworks use, requiring permits for public displays to ensure responsible handling by trained professionals. Local governments could establish designated councils to oversee permits and organize community-led fireworks events which are controlled, safe, and family-friendly.
Making these changes will prevent countless families from experiencing similar dangers and traumas and instead allow us to enjoy festive events safely. By signing this petition, you're joining me in calling for immediate action. Let’s protect our children and communities from needless harm. Please sign and share this petition to create safer celebrations for us all.
