Ban the use of mass surveillance cameras

Ban the use of mass surveillance cameras
The Issue
In recent years, the proliferation of surveillance technologies, such as Flock cameras, and now microphones, has raised significant concerns about privacy and civil liberties. These cameras, often touted as tools for crime prevention, are widespread in many communities, constantly recording public spaces and capturing vast amounts of data on law-abiding citizens without their consent or awareness.
The use of mass surveillance systems poses a considerable threat to privacy, potentially leading to the misuse of personal data and undermining trust between citizens and law enforcement. Studies reveal that these surveillance systems are not as effective as claimed in reducing crime rates, instead, they often lead to racial profiling and discrimination. Moreover, they operate with minimal oversight and transparency, leaving citizens in the dark about who has access to their data and how it is being used.
There are more effective and less intrusive methods to ensure public safety that respect individual rights and freedoms, such as community policing strategies, improved street lighting, and fostering community relationships. Implementing strict guidelines regulating the installation and use of surveillance systems can protect citizens’ rights without compromising safety.
We need to demand action from policymakers to halt the indiscriminate use of Flock cameras and similar devices.
- I demand that the Temecula City Council and Mayor terminate all partnerships with Flock with immediate effect and not enter into any new partnerships with other ALPR companies (Axon, Vigilant Solutions).
Sign this petition to protect our privacy rights and demand transparency and accountability in the use of surveillance technologies in our communities. Let’s stand together to ensure our rights are respected and upheld.
