This is an issue that is painfully close to my heart. A routine surgery for my rescue dachshund, Kandi, turned into a nightmare. A spay, a hernia repair and a lumpectomy. Standard procedures in veterinary practice. These, however, were followed by unbearable pain and suffering caused by the careless use of heating devices. Unsuspecting, Kandi was left on hot water bottles for her full two and a half hour surgery which resulted in full thickness burns covering almost 1/3 of her body. Her skin began tearing open revealing a 3cm wound which rapidly became more extensive, eventually necessitating a major skin flap procedure.

It breaks my heart to say that Kandi's experience is not the only one. More pets are suffering, unseen and unheard. Although accurate data is hard to collect due to lack of reporting regulations, anecdotal evidence points at a troubling trend that needs immediate rectification. By prohibiting the use of heat mats and hot water bottles in veterinary practices worldwide, we can take a step to safeguard our beloved pets from needless agony.

We cannot turn back time for Kandi but we can help ensure that other pets do not have to endure the same dreadful experience.
