The Issue

Fireworks, though undeniably beautiful, are a historic tradition fraught with adverse impacts. Environmentally, they are a menace. Research shows that fireworks cause a significant increase in particulate matter and introduce toxic heavy metals into the soil, water, and atmosphere. This contamination harms not only the air we breathe but also our aquatic ecosystems, where left-behind plastics and microplastics begin their destructive cycle in nature. Furthermore, fireworks contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, exacerbating climate change and environmental degradation.

The negative ripple effects of fireworks extend into the realm of public safety and wildlife preservation. Many animals, both domestic and wild, experience distress and disorientation due to the loud, unexpected noises, often resulting in trauma or fatal accidents as they attempt to escape the commotion. Birds abandon their nests, mothers leave offspring, and pets, like mine, run in terror, sometimes injuring themselves in the process. The long-term stress on human and animal populations cannot be underestimated.

Every year, I witness my cherished animals trembling in fear, their wide eyes conveying a terror that pierces through the festivities of the Fourth of July and other firework-heavy celebrations. Recently, we found out they have a problem with their heart , making these loud explosions not just terrifying, but potentially dangerous.  As you see the issue extends beyond my own household. Other Pets, wildlife, and our environment are all victims of this.

Taking these factors into account, I urge the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana, to lead the charge in prioritizing community well-being over outdated traditions by enacting a ban on fireworks. Alternative celebrations like laser shows or silent fireworks, already successfully implemented in other cities globally, provide us the opportunity to celebrate safely and sustainably. With our voices united, we can create a safer, cleaner, and kinder environment for all beings who share it.

Please join me in making Fort Wayne a healthier, safer place for our pets, wildlife, and future generations by signing this petition. Together, we have the power to prompt meaningful change.
