Ban the use of fireworks in domestic settings in the UK
The Issue
Every year, during fireworks season and beyond, my beloved dog shakes uncontrollably for hours as I try to provide comfort and reassurance. This is not just an issue isolated to Bonfire Night on November 5th; it extends over several days, forcing her into a state of distress that I cannot ease.
This heartbreaking scenario is not unique to my household. Across the UK, countless pet owners, parents of young children, and individuals with sensory sensitivities are affected by the thoughtless detonation of fireworks in residential neighborhoods. Fireworks are not just explosions in the sky – they are moments of anxiety for animals, panic for people with PTSD, and distress for families trying to safeguard their loved ones from loud, unpredictable noises.
The statistics are troubling. According to the RSPCA, every year numerous animals are reported missing or injured as a result of scare responses to fireworks. Reports from various animal welfare charities highlight this as a recurring and preventable issue. Moreover, beyond the distress to animals and people, fireworks can cause structural damage and lead to increased levels of pollution both in air and in local parks where debris is left behind.
There are viable, safer alternatives that can provide the same enjoyment without the associated trauma and environmental harm. Silent fireworks, laser light shows, or organised events away from residential areas respect our communities and the living creatures within them.
We are calling for an outright ban on the use of fireworks in domestic settings in the UK. By pushing for legislation that mandates organized fireworks displays and restricts private use, we can mitigate these adverse effects and foster a more considerate community.
Let us protect our pets, our environment, and our vulnerable citizens by prohibiting this unnecessary disruption. Please join me in supporting this cause – together, we can make a difference. Sign the petition to help us create a safer, healthier, and more harmonious world for all of us.
