The Issue

As a concerned parent in Ireland, I am deeply worried about the increasing consumption of high-caffeine energy drinks among children and teenagers. My own child recently experienced negative side effects such as jitteriness and heart palpitations after consuming one of these drinks, which has compelled me to take action. This issue strikes a personal chord, not just for the safety and well-being of my child, but for every child in Ireland who may be exposed to these potentially harmful beverages.

High-caffeine energy drinks are easily accessible and marketed in a way that attracts the younger generation, causing a public health dilemma. Studies have shown that nearly one-third of children aged 10-15 in Ireland consume these drinks regularly, unaware of the potential health risks. The World Health Organization has expressed concerns over the health implications of caffeine-laden energy drinks, particularly for the youth.

Excessive caffeine consumption can lead to increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and even anxiety, which can significantly affect the development and academic performance of young people. Furthermore, these drinks often contain an alarming combination of sugar and stimulants, potentially contributing to obesity and other metabolic disorders.

In light of these health concerns, many countries have adopted regulations restricting energy drink sales to minors. For instance, Lithuania and Latvia have successfully implemented bans, which have reduced the consumption rates and improved public health outcomes in their regions.

Centra, as one of the leading retail chains in Ireland, has a responsibility to promote healthy choices and safeguard our children from potential harm. By taking the initiative to ban the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to under-16s, Centra can set a precedent for other retailers across Ireland and galvanize support for necessary regulatory changes.

We propose Centra immediately halt the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to individuals under 16. Implementing clear signage in stores, training staff to check identification, and conducting awareness campaigns can ensure the successful enforcement of this policy.

This is a crucial step towards creating a healthier environment for our children. Please sign this petition to urge Centra to lead by example and prioritize the health and safety of Ireland’s youth. Together, we can make a difference.
