The Issue

Fireworks used to be a joy for me as they lit up the night sky, offering a momentary escape. But for my two beloved retired racing Greyhounds, every explosion is an impending disaster. Having given their competitive lives to racing, they now deserve peace and safety in their retirement. Unfortunately, bursts of artillery and bright flashes now send them spiraling into fear, undoing months of careful love and rehabilitation.

Fireworks affect pets and wildlife in profound ways. The unexpected loud noises trigger anxiety, creating a terrifying environment not just for our domesticated companions but also for wildlife. Birds are often disoriented, flying into buildings and suffering fatal injuries. Many animals abandon nests or burrows in panic, placing themselves at risk from predators, dehydration, and the cold.

Each year, the weeks surrounding Guy Fawkes Night, Diwali, and New Year's Eve are marked by reports of terrified animals. In 2020 alone, the RSPCA received over 2,500 calls related to animals in distress due to fireworks. Additionally, humans who suffer from PTSD, such as veterans, and those with sensory sensitivities are also adversely affected by these displays.

While fireworks bring fleeting enjoyment to some, the ongoing trauma they incite is too great a price for our vulnerable populations. We can seek alternatives that preserve the celebration without the destructive impact. Several towns across the UK have embraced 'silent' fireworks, which focus on visual spectacle without the disruptive noise. These can be enjoyed publicly in regulated events without causing widespread harm.

The resolution to this challenging situation is straightforward: ban the sale of fireworks to the general public. By restricting fireworks only to organized public displays, we can ensure safe enjoyment for all while protecting our pets and wildlife. Legislation and ordinances across the UK can be adapted to encourage or mandate these organized displays, reducing the risk of injury and distress.

We owe our animals, our wildlife, and indeed, each other, a duty of care. Sign this petition to urge policymakers to enact laws that protect our voiceless friends without compromising our celebratory traditions. Let's work together to ensure that fireworks are a controlled pleasure that doesn't come at the cost of our pets' and wildlife's well-being.
