The Issue

Every year, the joy of festivities often brings distress to many in Burlington, Ontario. As a resident deeply concerned about the well-being of animals, veterans, and refugees, I can no longer ignore the profound impact fireworks have on them, as well as on our environment.

The loud explosions from fireworks send terrified pets running into dangerous situations; they can lead to severe reactions in veterans who suffer from PTSD, and they create an overwhelming atmosphere for refugees who have fled from war-torn areas. These booms that are delightful to some are, in fact, a source of acute stress for many.

Moreover, fireworks are detrimental to our environment. According to a study published by the Environmental Science and Technology journal, fireworks are significant contributors to air, water, and soil pollution. Every display results in a burst of toxic chemicals into our atmosphere, compromising the quality of the air we breathe and contributing to long-term ecological damage.

The use of fireworks must be strictly regulated in Burlington. By banning their sale and use, we can ensure the safety and comfort of sensitive individuals and animals. Simultaneously, we can protect our environment from the harmful pollutants released during fireworks displays. We need to encourage and adopt alternative ways of celebration that are equally exciting yet environmentally friendly. For example, light shows, drone displays or silent fireworks can offer a mesmerizing experience without the damaging impact.

By taking action, we are not only caring for the vulnerable beings who share our community but also safeguarding the natural world that we hold in trust for future generations. Join me in urging the local authorities to enact a ban on the sale and setting off of fireworks in Burlington, ON. Together, we can build a community that respects and protects all its members.
