Ban the Production/Use of Plastic Fishing Nets in California

Ban the Production/Use of Plastic Fishing Nets in California
The Issue
As a concerned citizen, I am deeply troubled by the significant amount of plastic fishing nets littering our ocean in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The commercial fishing industry is mostly responsible for this environmental catastrophe. California, known for its progressive stance on environmental issues, has already taken commendable steps by banning plastic straws and Styrofoam. It's time we extend these efforts to include plastic fishing nets. Let's hold the people who rely on the oceans for their livelihoods accountable, and force them to respect the very thing that provides them with an income.
Before our reliance on plastics skyrocketed, fishing nets were made from natural fibers like hemp - an equally effective alternative that is far less harmful to our oceans and marine life. By returning to these sustainable practices, we can significantly reduce our contribution to oceanic pollution.
California has cannabis plants in abundance that could easily be repurposed into hemp for nets. With its natural strength, buoyancy, and resistance to mold and mildew, hemp is an ideal material for producing durable and effective fishing nets that can withstand the elements and reduce the environmental impact of the fishing industry.
According to a study published in Scientific Reports (2018), 46% of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch's mass is composed of discarded fishing nets, most of which are made from non-biodegradable plastics such as polyester and nylon. This not only poses a threat to marine life, but also contributes significantly to the amount of microplastics humans consume when we eat seafood.
By banning the manufacture of plastic fishing nets in California, we can set a precedent for other states and countries worldwide while taking an important step towards sending a global message that THE OCEANS DESERVE BETTER!
I urge you all - citizens, lawmakers, environmentalists - let us unite against this pressing issue that threatens our environment and future generations' right to clean oceans. Please sign this petition urging California lawmakers to ban the production and use of plastic fishing nets within state borders.
